The use of AI, how we look at it

We have been busy over the past year looking at how AI could best be used within our industry. Everyone seems to be working on it, but who still sees the whole picture? So time to list some key issues.

Application areas

It is of course important to deploy AI where it will be of most benefit to publishers. Within the content creation process, we see a number of key application areas. Specifically, these include:

  • Generative AI: automatically generating content based on prompts or pre-existing material.
  • Metadata: assigning 'tags' so that content and images can be easily retrieved or given a certain qualification.
  • Image generation: automatic creation of images based on prompts or image descriptions.
  • Accessibility: content related to the European Accessibilty Act, e.g. describing images.
  • Structuring content: converting a manuscript into structured material so that the creation process is easier.

Structured content gives the best results

A lot is possible with AI but we clearly see that the best results can be achieved with content that has a unified structure. Fortunately, this has been instilled in us, which is why we will mainly deploy this technique within our existing products and services.

Make or buy

In the coming year, we will obviously develop a number of applications ourselves. However, we also see that there is already a lot of technology available that can be perfectly integrated within our existing services. In other words, it is certainly not our intention to build everything ourselves, especially if good solutions are already available.
